Literature Text

The first story I ever submitted that was published, in my college's literary magazine. It is quite a feeling to be able to say you are a published author, even if it's something that small. (Written October 1, 1997, if anyone wants to know.)

Of the five stories I submitted, it was my least favorite, but the review committee's favorite. This made me realize I am not always the best judge of my own work.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Specifically:
-- Did this piece generate any emotional response? If so, what?

-- Without increasing the length of the piece, would you make any changes to reshape the focus in any way? For instance, did one of the segments not work for you, and you would rather have seen more time spent elsewhere, or on a new snippet of characters' lives?

-- Does the lack of dialogue harm the piece in any way? Strengthen it?

-- The story prompt was to focus on setting, above other things. Did you get a good sense of the setting of this piece? What changes would you have made?

From the removal of the bench was when the piece really became sad. I was relieved to know the tree would stay, but the ending still made me sink a little.

I liked this style with lack of dialogue. It made it feel as if this was a story that happened very long ago, if you know what I mean. Like a story that's being remembered.
